AI Summary

Once dismissed as mere blogging software, WordPress has evolved into the market-leading content management system by balancing user-friendly editing with vast, community-driven extensibility. Unlike restrictive cloud-based builders, it offers full data ownership, infinite customization via an extensive plugin library, and a clean separation of content and design. By avoiding proprietary lock-in and providing unmatched scalability, WordPress remains the gold standard for those seeking a professional, adaptable, and long-term web presence.

Back in early 2009, we were happy creating basic brochure websites and Flash components. Then one of our clients asked us to build a website using WordPress as the Content Management System, CMS. Our response: “You mean that blogging software?”

At that point, we did some research on the existing CMS market and it was between Joomla and Drupal. A few were using WordPress, because it was really easy to use. However, there were many limitations to WordPress initially. For example, there was no menu system in WordPress. It’s sort of hard to create or use a website without menus!

We concluded that WordPress was the better choice for most users just because it was so much easier to use. Over the years, it has evolved into a full-fledged CMS that has come to dominate the market.

One key benefit of partnering with the CMS leader is its traction in the marketplace. There is an enormous community of developers out there who are solving problems and enhancing the experience.

Today, there are many choices within the WordPress environment. A customized approach is perfect for websites that have more exacting brand needs and more technical requirements. Its extensive plugin library provides a solution for nearly any functionality imaginable—often for free—outmatching the limited or expensive app stores of its competitors, such as hosted solutions. Furthermore, WordPress offers a more focused editing experience that separates content from design, preventing the “clunky” feel of all-in-one builders while still allowing for infinite customization. For those who want a website that can grow and adapt without being locked into a proprietary ecosystem, WordPress remains the gold standard.
